Same $999, two different machines

This is the cleanest price comparison on our site: Engwe lists the M20 2.0 with a 15.6Ah single battery at $999, and with a dual battery at $1,199.[source] The Air Max is $999. So the question is not which is cheaper — it is what each $999 buys. Engwe's own product page describes the M20 2.0 as a full-suspension, fat-tire, moped-style e-bike. The Air Max is a carbon-framed commuter. Those are different vehicles for different rides, and the spec sheet shows it most clearly in one number: weight.

Weight: 62 lb vs 88.6 lb

Engwe lists the M20 2.0 at 88.6 lb (40.2 kg) with a single battery and 99.8 lb (45.3 kg) with two.[source] The Air Max weighs about 62 lb with both of its batteries installed. At the matched $999 configuration, that is roughly 26 lb of difference — the largest weight gap of any comparison on this site. The reason is stated plainly on Engwe's own spec sheet: the M20 2.0's frame material is iron,[source] while the Air Max's frame is Toray T800 carbon and weighs 7.7 lb on its own. If you ever carry the bike up steps, onto a rack, or into an apartment elevator, this is the number that will decide it for you. If the bike lives at ground level and never gets lifted, it matters much less.

Range: read the fine print on which version the number belongs to

Engwe's spec sheet states 63 miles at throttle-only operation and 162 miles at PAS mode 1 — and it labels those explicitly as the max range of the two-battery version.[source] We want to be careful here, because this is exactly the kind of number that gets misquoted: those figures belong to the $1,199 dual-battery configuration, not the $999 single-battery model this comparison is priced against. Motor and torque: split the two numbers apart

Both bikes use a 750W rated motor. Engwe lists a 1,200W peak for the M20 2.0's magnesium-alloy integrated wheel motor, against the Air Max's 900W peak — a clear win for Engwe on surge power. On sustained pulling force the order flips: the Air Max is rated at 85 Nm, the M20 2.0 at 75 N.m.[source] Engwe does not publish the pedal-assist sensor type on the product page, so that row is marked as not published rather than guessed; the Air Max uses a bilateral torque sensor.
